4,000 dead milestone quietly approaches
Sometime this month or the next, 4,000 U.S. military personnel will have been killed in Iraq. Today the number stands at 3,952. In May, 2007, 127 servicepeople were killed; in the last three months casualties have fallen to levels not seen since early in the war. Some would say that means the Surge is working. I think that's akin to saying a prosthetic limb is working after you've blown off the real one. Five damn years so far. McCain says maybe a hundred more. A majority is now against the war, which is everything we peaceniks have worked for, but the war goes on and I don't know that we've saved one damn life. Maybe it would have been worse without our efforts. But damn! I'm sick of this war.
