Alabama sheriff jailed for starving prisoners

It's only for one night, but Sheriff Greg Bartlett will be going to jail for pocketing more than $200,000 over the last three years of money that was supposed to go to feed prisoners.

Oddly enough, though, what the sheriff has done is not illegal, as an old state law allows the sheriff to pocket any funds "left over" from the food budget.

One man has lost 15 pounds since October, another, 30 pounds. Prisoners have to supplement their diet from the jail store, where items are over-priced, so of course the poor prisoners suffer the most. Read more at the New York Times.
